The UNMISS Force Commander, Lt Gen Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam decorated Rwanda Defence Forces serving under United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) with United Nations peacekeepers’ medal and recognition certificates.
In a colourful ceremony held on 01 August 2014 at UNMISS Rwanbat Base in Juba, Rwanda Infantry battalion and Rwanda Aviation Unit were awarded in recognition of “their excellent and professional service rendered to the organisation as United Nations Peacekeepers”.
During the function, the UNMISS Force Commander, also the Guest of Honour, commended Rwandan battalion (Rwanbatt 1) and Rwanda Aviation Unit (RAU2) for their professionalism, discipline, good cooperation and particularly for invaluable contribution to the protection of Civilians in South Sudan.
“Being decorated with medals is recognition of the great work you have done within the UN Mission in South Sudan. You have fulfilled your UNMISS mandated tasks to everyone’s satisfaction,” stated the UNMISS Force Commander.
Col Mutara NKANGURA, the Rwandan Contingent Commander reaffirmed the continued support of Rwanda Peacekeepers to UNMISS mandate.
“I promise you that the Rwandan contingent in the UNMISS, shall continue to support the mission leadership to successfully achieve its mandate while working together as UNMISS family”.
The United Nations peacekeepers’ medal and recognition certificate are awarded to a Peacekeeper having successfully completed at least six months serving in United Nations Mission.
The ceremony was attended by Senior UNMISS officials, Military and Police Components as well as members of Rwandan Community living in South Sudan.
