The AU-UN Hybrid Peacekeeping mission in Darfur has awarded Rwanda peacekeepers (Rwanbatt 39) medals and certificates of merit, in recognition of the job well done.
The event was held at El Fasher Super Camp on May 17, 2014 and officiated on behalf of UNAMID Leadership by Col Sam K Baguma, Acting North Sector Commander and the Rwandan Contingent Commander.
In his speech Col Baguma told Rwanda peacekeepers that UNAMID very appreciative of their work in Peacekeeping operations in Darfur, and that is why they have been decorated these medals.
“I urge you to uphold you commitment, keep the course and together we uplift the Rwandan flag high everywhere we are”, said Col Baguma.
Rwanbatt 39 is among 4 Rwandan battalions that are deployed in AU–UN Mission in Darfur.
Rwanda has in recent years participated in bids to bring about peaceful settlement of disputes and resolution of conflicts around the world.
Rwandan peacekeepers also participates in other missions under African Union–United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur, UN Mission in South Sudan, UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali and UN Interim Security Force for Abyei.
Rwanda currently maintains more than 4,000 peacekeepers in various missions and is presently ranked the 6th biggest troop contributor in peacekeeping operations in the world.
