Ambassador Dr. Charles MURIGANDE presented Letters of Credence to His Excellency Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III, President of the Republic of the Philippines as well as the Letters of Recall of his predecessor, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Ben RUGANGAZI, on January 10, 2013.
The ceremony was presided over 13 other non-resident Ambassadors of their countries to Philippines.
During the event, Amb. Murigande conveyed His Excellency President Paul KAGAME’s greetings and best wishes for His Excellency President Benigno S.C. AQUINO III and for the people of the Philippines and reiterated Rwanda’s strong desire to deepen the existing relations with the Philippines.
President Aquino III highlighted the fact that the Philippines and Rwanda share a lot in common especially their determination to be self-defined which is contributing to their recent economic achievements.
The Philippines is one of the Tiger Cub Economies in Southeast Asia together with Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand— young Tigers following the 4 Asian Tigers: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
The world bank 2011 report states that Philippines is the 5th richest country in South East Asia and 43rd largest in the world, with an estimated annual GDP (PPP) of about US$ 391.1 billion.
Its economy is anchored on agriculture but with substantial contributions including manufacturing, mining, remittances from overseas Filipinos, and service industries such as tourism as well as medical tourism and increasingly the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Rwanda can learn a lot from the Philippines’s experience in attracting investment in BPO sector, mobilization of the Diaspora’s remittances, technical and skills development and in agriculture, especially rice production and fish farming.
